Sheets should be changed at least once a week.
Here's why:
Hygiene: During sleep, we shed skin cells, sweat, and oils.1 These can accumulate on sheets, providing a breeding ground for dust mites, bacteria, and mold.2
Comfort: Clean sheets feel fresher and more inviting, leading to better sleep quality.3
Consider these factors:
Health conditions: If you have allergies or sensitive skin, more frequent washing may be necessary.5
For bedspreads:
Less frequent washing: Bedspreads generally don't have direct skin contact.
Wash as needed: Wash your bedspread when it looks visibly dirty, smells musty, or has stains.
General guidelines:
Sheets need to be cleaned: Weekly
Pillowcases need to be cleaned: Weekly
Duvet covers need to be cleaned: Weekly or bi-weekly
Comforters/blankets need to b cleaned: Monthly
Bedspreads: As needed, I would say: "If it's used often then clean it often." Most things like hats, coats, gloves, and bedspreads go unwashed do to it being out of site, out of mind.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure a clean and comfortable sleep environment.
